Photographers exploring a new city are often drawn to the many doors and gates that line its streets. Just as buildings can come in so many different shapes and flavors, so do doors. They are beautiful objects, each with its own personality, welcoming or warning visitors who approach, keeping people in or out. After all, in a city, there is always an in and an out, a public and private life. Outside everyone is mixed together, shopping, having coffee, cycling in and out of office buildings and shopping centers. But the crowds, no matter their diversity, are often faceless. Too many people, going along and getting along, too many faces to remember. For the real thing, you need to go deeper, into the cities interiors, where, free from the public eye, all of the odd eccentricities people try to hide are free to thrive and blossom, behind the safety of a locked door. This is the fuel that allows our imaginations to travel, each door we pass a little different, concealing behind them not only houses and tea rooms, but also mystery; a small promise of something different, something new, strange and unique occurring only inches away.
