A portrait is a special kind of photograph. The idea is that the photographer faces his subject and his subject is asked to shed his or her armor and become vulnerable, so that the lens may see them as they are. A portrait is supposed to capture not only a face but an essence. This requires honesty like perhaps no other genre of photography, because who we are and who we show the world are two very different things. As the latter is usually a mask of protection for the former, in a portrait photography, a photographer is tasked with the monumental work of coaxing his or her subject to drop their impulses to represent themselves in their best light, and instead present themselves as they are, whether it is for better or for worse.
