Balloons are impossible not to love. Releasing a bunch of these into the air fills any occasion with glee. A parade, a birthday party, New Years Eve, they lift us up with them as they rise into the air by the hundreds, every size and lighter than air, flying away into the clouds.
Getting a balloon as a child is a special kind of gift because they are temporary, just for the occasion. They are a celebration of a moment, and belong exclusively to that moment. They don’t last long after it. Also for a child a balloon is nearly alive, eager to go its own way, as it wrestles your tight grip, until, when you’ve finally decided that the moment is right, you let it go, like releasing an animal back into the wild. It is peculiar because a balloon doesn’t do anything in particular besides floating, its only real purpose is to be light and wonderful, to spread joy, like a kind smile. In this gallery, we return the favor and celebrate the balloon.
