Clocks are a tricky subject in photography, because they are also symbols synonymous with time. Images of clocks tend to blend together, because we’ve seen so many clock-faces filmed, painted, and photographed to visually represent time passing. This makes it hard to make a strong and impressionable image of a clock. It’s hard to stand apart from the rest. When done with the right eye, however, a photographer can tap back into the power of the symbol, and make us face what could easily be a well-worn cliché, as if seeing it for the first time. When this occurs, clocks make us reflective of the past, and nostalgic for the fleeting passage of time.
These are photos that each have a fresh take on a familiar symbol. Share your own images of clocks by tagging them with #clock.
