Through the act of shooting itself, you\u2019ll often find a creative spark emerge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn19.picsart.com\/92437453870.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Q: Why are you a photographer?<\/h3>\n<p>I think most of us have a desire to express ourselves artistically in some way.\u00a0 I don\u2019t consider myself to be particularly creative in the sense that I can see or make things up in my head and then make it happen in the camera or on a canvas (although I do try to challenge myself).\u00a0 But, I am good at seeing visually and photography allows me to capture what I see, express it in a creative way, and then share that vision with others.\u00a0 The wonderful thing about recent innovations in digital photography and with apps like PicsArt is that it allows anyone with a reasonably good smart phone to get creative and have fun with photography.\u00a0 It\u2019s this ability to share my vision with others, to show them something they have never seen, or maybe something they have seen but in a\u00a0different way, that is one of the reasons I am a photographer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn11.picsart.com\/16092460326.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn14.picsart.com\/47271772078.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>Q: How did you wind up with this dream job?\u00a0 Do you ever pinch yourself that you are getting paid to do what you love?\u00a0 How long did it take you before you started making money with photography?<\/h3>\n<p>Well, at this point I\u2019m just a part-time, semi-professional.\u00a0 I make a little money on the side, but far from enough to live on, and I\u2019m not entirely sure I want to go completely pro.\u00a0 On the one hand, there\u2019s a sense of freedom that comes with being out on your own, but on the other hand, turning something that you love into a business can sometimes take a lot of the joy out of it.\u00a0 Life is full of compromises.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn14.picsart.com\/45267142176.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Q: How long did it take you to \u201cget good\u201d at what you do?\u00a0 Was it something that came naturally or something that took a lot of practice?<\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019m still getting good.\u00a0 It\u2019s a continual ongoing process that never stops and I think it\u2019s important to keep striving to improve and learn.\u00a0 There\u2019s always more to learn and if you stop learning, you stop growing as a photographer.\u00a0 While I think that some of us may have a natural eye for seeing which makes it easier for us, as I said in my eBook, anyone who wants to put in the time and effort, can learn to take better photographs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn13.picsart.com\/30906577664.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Q: What is the first thing you like to take a photo of when you arrive in a new destination?<\/h3>\n<p>Anything.Usually at a new destination it\u2019s not difficult to find something different and interesting that catches your eye.\u00a0 However, there are times when, for some reason, you just have trouble \u2018seeing\u2019.\u00a0 We all occasionally have creative blocks, particularly when a place is not so new, like your home town.\u00a0 In this situation, try just pointing the camera at something, anything, and start taking photos.\u00a0 Don\u2019t worry about whether it\u2019s a great subject or not, or whether the composition is just right.\u00a0 Just start shooting.\u00a0 Through the act of shooting itself, you\u2019ll often find a creative spark emerge.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn13.picsart.com\/36366888246.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Q: You have a great ability to vividly capture a community\u2019s culture through the \u201ceveryday.\u201d\u00a0 Do you have any tips on how to navigate cultural protocols, like when\u00a0taking photos of people?<\/h3>\n<p>First off, do a bit of research and find out what those cultural protocols are before you arrive in a new place.\u00a0 Second, be a participant, not just an observer.\u00a0 Don\u2019t just point, shoot, and walk away.\u00a0 Try to interact with the people you are attempting to photograph.\u00a0 I know this isn\u2019t always easy, especially if there is a language barrier, but it doesn\u2019t have to be a lot.\u00a0 A simple smile can open a lot of doors.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn18.picsart.com\/80082085400.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Q: In your book,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.darinrogers.net\/products\/ebooks\/capturing-the-journey\">Capturing the Journey<\/a>, you mention that taking a photo is more than clicking a button to snap an image, it\u2019s about how you compose the image, taking surroundings into consideration. What are some of the more surprising surroundings you\u2019ve come across that have made a photo come to life?<\/h3>\n<p>One good example was actually at a large dry lakebed in South Australia, a wide open empty space with nothing to be seen for miles.\u00a0 It was a good illustrationin making creative use of your surroundings.\u00a0 On its own, the surroundings were not particularly photogenic or interesting, but by using something elseas the subject, or someone in this case, and making use of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.darinrogers.net\/2010\/06\/not-so-dry-lake\/\">creative composition<\/a>, I was actually able to create an interesting image that emphasizes the emptiness of the surroundings.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn12.picsart.com\/21375933385.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Q:Architectural photography is truly an art form. Do you have any recommendations for capturing a building? Do you consider its smaller details and surroundings?<\/h3>\n<p>Good architectural photography can be a lot more complex than many people realize. Although many components go into creating a good photograph of a building or architectural space, lighting is very important.\u00a0 As an example, beginner photographers often make the mistake of thinking that buildings, as well as city skylines, are best shot after dark because that\u2019s when they are all lit up.\u00a0 But what generally happens is the building itself disappears into the black sky and you\u2019re just left with a bunch of lights.\u00a0 And that black sky is boring.\u00a0 You are much better of going for the \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.darinrogers.net\/2011\/01\/lights-at-sydney-university\/\">magic hour\u2019<\/a>, the twilight time roughly a half-hour before it is truly dark when the natural ambient light is balanced with the artificial light of the buildings.\u00a0 You\u2019ll still have some nice color in the sky and the building won\u2019t get lost in an empty black background.<\/p>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn13.picsart.com\/38221370035.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn12.picsart.com\/27821661318.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>Q: What photo are you most proud of AND WHY?<\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s almost impossible to pick a single image that stands out as the one I\u2019m most proud of.\u00a0 However, when I went back through some of my images considering this question, what ultimately stood out was the ones I\u2019ve taken for friends and family.\u00a0 I\u2019m not a portrait or studio photographer, and I\u2019m\u00a0sure that someone who specializes in that genre could do better than me.\u00a0 But, I\u2019m still most proud of those\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Darin-Rogers-Photography\/158990645540\">images<\/a>\u00a0because of what they mean to the people I\u2019ve photographed and the memories I\u2019ve captured for them.\u00a0 And this is probably as good an answer as any for the reason why I\u2019m a photographer.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn14.picsart.com\/46347648221.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Q: What other sources do you go to for inspiration?<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.chasejarvis.com\/blog\/\">Chase Jarvis<\/a>\u00a0is always good for interesting blog posts photography related.<a href=\"http:\/\/davidduchemin.com\/\">David du Chemin<\/a>\u00a0is one of my favorites, not just because he does some wonderful photography, but also because he writes some incredibly inspiring blog posts.And, closer to home, Seattle photographer\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cornicello.com\/\">John Cornicello<\/a>\u00a0for his portrait work.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn16.picsart.com\/65834801646.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn17.picsart.com\/77163691884.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn15.picsart.com\/59768982940.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"434\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn13.picsart.com\/36431428511.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn13.picsart.com\/36056038809.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn15.picsart.com\/58176802159.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn11.picsart.com\/10965559134.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn13.picsart.com\/34396792863.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn13.picsart.com\/38509905116.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Darin Rogers is a photographer, writer, and part-time engineer.&nbsp; He specializes in travel, cultural, and landscape images.&nbsp; Originally from the Pacific Northwest, he is currently based in Darwin, Australia.&nbsp; You can see more of his work at&nbsp;<a title=\"www.darinrogers.net\" href=\"http:\/\/www.darinrogers.net\/\">www.darinrogers.net<\/a>.
