How did you first get into photography?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">I chose photography as an elective in high school. \u00a0I had so much fun learning the camera functions, developing of the film and experimenting in the darkroom. \u00a0Of course things have changed quite a bit with digital photography, but black and white film photography in high school is where it all started.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn12.picsart.com\/26272019444.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Q.<\/strong> <strong>You actually earned a degree in digital photography from the International Academy of Design and Technology. What aspect of this experience stays with you the most when you work on your current projects?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lighting techniques, knowing what equipment is best suited for each situation and why. \u00a0A great camera does not necessarily produce great photos; the art is in the manipulation of the camera and equipment, not in the specs.\u00a0There is a lot more to photography than the camera.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn15.picsart.com\/54826986414.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>\u00a0Q: Can you describe\u00a0briefly to our community what light painting is all about?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Light painting is a long exposure photo typically taken in a very dark environment.\u00a0 Exposures can range anywhere from 1 second to many minutes.\u00a0 During this long exposure the artist moves a light (or series of lights) around as if they were painting a scene while surrounded by darkness.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Using the technique of light painting the artist can paint or sculpt forms within the image. The artist controls whether an element remains cloaked in darkness or accentuated by light. Deep contrast between light and dark can be used to emphasize forms in a very abstract manner. Often varying intensities, colors, and textural patterns of light are used to tell the story.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn15.picsart.com\/59720438182.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Q. How did you personally get interested in making your own light-painting portraits?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">I always knew of the ability to create images with moving lights and long exposures. \u00a0I didn\u2019t begin to take interest until I found an article with some images of Picasso doing light painting drawings captured by Gjon Mili. \u00a0I found light painting master Patrick Rochon in my research, and I recognized the potential for portraits to be unique and powerful. \u00a0My first subject was myself.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn11.picsart.com\/10346432706.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Q. What is the most interesting thing you\u2019ve learned about light painting since you first started it (conceptually or technically)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Light painting is limitless. \u00a0Even my mistakes sometimes intrigue me and lead me down another path. \u00a0There are no rules.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdnblog.picsart.com\/2013\/10\/94064328348.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Q. You also do standard portraiture<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;\">.\u00a0<\/span>What is the most important skill necessary for a great portrait?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">For a \u201cgreat\u201d portrait it\u2019s necessary to capture the subject\u2019s personality, emotion, distinct presence; something that makes it more than just an image of a person. \u00a0Technically speaking, I feel lighting is one of the most crucial elements of a portrait.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn17.picsart.com\/75880795649.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Q. You have done quite a bit of work with still-life. Tell us about more about it.<span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Still life is fun. \u00a0Most things present a challenge; is it reflective? What type of light would bring out its texture?
