{"id":20593,"date":"2015-02-07T22:50:59","date_gmt":"2015-02-07T22:50:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/picsart.com\/blog\/post\/beginners-guide-manual-exposure"},"modified":"2022-05-24T02:02:56","modified_gmt":"2022-05-24T09:02:56","slug":"beginners-guide-manual-exposure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/picsart.com\/blog\/beginners-guide-manual-exposure\/","title":{"rendered":"The Beginner&#8217;s Guide to Manual Exposure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\">The single most important part of your camera is the internal light meter. \u00a0To get started, set up your camera as follows:<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">-Put your camera into <a href=\"https:\/\/picsart.com\/blog\/post\/beginners-guide-to-manual-exposure-part-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Manual exposure<\/a> mode.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">-Select the \u00a0\u201cSpot Metering\u201d option.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">When you look through the viewfinder and press the shutter halfway down, the meter will appear.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Example: \u00a0(-3&#8230;-2&#8230;-1&#8230;0&#8230;+1&#8230;+2&#8230;+3)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">To take a meter reading, zoom in, or get close to your subject. Place the middle portion of the viewfinder area over the part you want to meter. \u00a0The camera will then read the amount of light being reflected back into it, and place the meter accordingly. \u00a0This is where you take control of the camera. \u00a0By <a href=\"https:\/\/picsart.com\/blog\/post\/using-aperture-to-your-advantage-part-one\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow noopener noreferrer\">adjusting your aperture<\/a>, shutter speed, and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/picsart.com\/blog\/post\/what-is-iso-how-to-use-iso-on-digital-and-phone-cameras-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"follow noopener noreferrer\">ISO<\/a>, you will determine your subject\u2019s exposure.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn36.picsart.com\/161005398000201.jpeg?r1024x1024\" alt=\"manual exposure guide\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Let\u2019s use a simple blue sky as an example. \u00a0Adjust your fstop\/shutter\/ISO so the meter line stops on the 0. \u00a0This is the middle of the meter, also known as 18% grey. \u00a0At this exposure, your sky will appear as medium blue.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn30.picsart.com\/161005381001201.jpeg?r1024x1024\" alt=\"manual exposure guide\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">You can make the subject appear darker: \u00a0If you want to create a darker sky, you can change your camera settings to allow in one stop less light. This can be done by using a smaller aperture, a faster shutter speed, or a slower ISO. When you do this, you will notice the meter will change to the -1. \u00a0Now you will have slightly darker blue.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn24.picsart.com\/161005365004201.jpeg?r1024x1024\" alt=\"manual exposure guide\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">If you allow in even less light, the meter will go to -2. \u00a0The result will be a very dark blue sky.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn27.picsart.com\/161005352002201.jpeg?r1024x1024\" alt=\"manual exposure guide\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span id=\"Remember_-_negative_means_you_are_subtracting_light\">Remember, &#8211; (negative) means you are subtracting light.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Or Lighter: \u00a0If you want your sky to be light blue, you can change your camera settings to allow in one stop more light. Using a slower shutter speed, wider aperture, or faster ISO will do this.
