{"id":21709,"date":"2016-03-07T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-07T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/picsart.com\/blog\/?p=21709"},"modified":"2020-08-19T10:02:56","modified_gmt":"2020-08-19T17:02:56","slug":"women-photographers-capturing-the-essence-of-women-on-film","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/picsart.com\/blog\/women-photographers-capturing-the-essence-of-women-on-film\/","title":{"rendered":"Woman: Capturing the Essence of Women on Film"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is no secret that throughout history, women have been muses for some of the most talented and renowned artists.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also no secret that throughout that same history, women have been more than muses, forging new frontiers and creating their own art<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is exceptional is that it is only in the past few decades that women have finally been recognized for being on the flip side of this muse-and-artist relationship, and recognized as being legitimately great at it (truly, it is only in this last decade that women photographers and artists have finally been able to create the \u201cusual\u201d that John Stuart Mill referenced when he wrote \u201cEverything which is usual appears natural\u201d \u2014 a concept even further developed by Linda Nochlin in \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Why_Have_There_Been_No_Great_Women_Artists%3F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d). What is revitalizing is seeing these women-muses through the eyes of their sisters. Which is exactly what makes <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thereallisaleone.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisa Leone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s series, aptly titled \u201cWoman,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so thoroughly refreshing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Lisa\u00a0explains, \u201cWhen I started as a cinematographer, I could count the amount of women on my hand shooting. There isn\u2019t a strangeness anymore. While attending the High School of Art + Design, she starting shooting her friends, and eventually was asked by the break dancing group Rock Steady to take some pre-tour photos. This led to Lisa taking photos of artists like Snoop Dogg, Fab 5 Freddy, Big Daddy Kane, and more (which led to her most recent book, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/minormattersbooks.com\/products\/here-i-am-photographs-by-lisa-leone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HERE I AM<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d). Her work was talked about as intimate, raw and beautiful. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it was when she started taking photos of women artists that she really felt an energy and a drive to \u201creveal all of their inner beauty.\u201d She says, \u201cI was always excited when I could go shoot Yo-Yo or when I got to shoot Queen Latifah. I loved all the dancing. Working with Joan Scheckel, a producer, director, writer, photographer and teacher, Lisa found her muse for her \u201cWoman\u201d series. \u201cJoan asked me to take some photos of her. I thought it would be like an hour-long shoot and I ended up photographing her for six hours. The imagery just exploded.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After that, she recalls \u201cthere were all these other women around me who were so powerful and doing amazing things. So I started asking them if I could photograph them.\u201d What she found was that besides being inspired to shoot them, she also felt inspired by their reactions to being shot. \u201cThey were like \u2018Oh my god, I never saw myself like that\u2019 or \u2018I didn\u2019t know I was beautiful\u2019 and that was touching. I got interested in capturing that. It\u2019s just the woman and myself.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisa explains that she didn\u2019t want to do \u201cthe typical portrait\u201d and that as a society we are too \u201cfocused on this cursory beauty.\u201d She wanted something else. \u201cThese shoots were interesting for me. I was really getting to the essence of their beauty. I was trying to bring that inner beauty outside. It shouldn\u2019t just be about the facade. We\u2019re complex creatures.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While women should be celebrated every day, since International Women\u2019s Day is this week, we wanted to share some of Lisa Leone\u2019s \u201cWoman\u201d photos along with some of her stories. We hope you\u2019re as inspired as we are to celebrate women \u2014 the artists and the muses. And to those of you who are aspiring women photographers, Lisa Leone currently works for the National YoungArts Foundation, an amazing organization that supports emerging artists 15-18 years old with master class experiences, cash awards and the opportunity to become a U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts (deadline to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youngarts.org\/apply\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apply is October 2016<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re aspiring and not 15-18 years old, she still has some great advice for you: \u201cBe fearless. If there is an instinct you have, go for it. Usually it\u2019s right. This was the first session that ignited the project. Joan needed shots of herself and what was supposed to be a half hour session turned into six hours\u2026we went straight into the night. She\u2019s had two kids and is always running around. I wanted to bring her back to a time when she was feeling glamorous and sexy (she got any guy when we were young, amazing to watch!). I remember after the shoot, she looked at the photos and said surprisingly, &#8216;oh, I look good.&#8217;\u00a0That was it for me\u2026I was so happy to hear those words come out of her mouth. She asked me to shoot her for a magazine spread, so I brought her to Ileana\u2019s backyard\u2026 quiet and private. Since she\u2019s so at home in nature, I asked her to walk up and down that path.
