{"id":24885,"date":"2016-06-19T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-06-19T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/picsart.com\/blog\/?p=24885"},"modified":"2022-06-13T06:14:24","modified_gmt":"2022-06-13T13:14:24","slug":"combining-creativity-and-fatherhood-on-picsart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/picsart.com\/blog\/combining-creativity-and-fatherhood-on-picsart\/","title":{"rendered":"Combining Creativity and Fatherhood on PicsArt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s Father&#8217;s Day and to celebrate, we wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the work of one of our favorite fathers on the app. Willem Odendaal (<a href=\"https:\/\/picsart.com\/javas1willem\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@javas1willem<\/a>) is a police officer in South Africa\u00a0who is\u00a0no stranger to an active lifestyle. He has an eye for adventure and this is apparent in his gallery on PicsArt, filled with jaw-dropping edits that feature cataclysmic\u00a0airplanes, crash landings in the desert and other\u00a0adventurous musings come to life in the app. He says his\u00a0experiences \u2014 everything from parachuting to diving \u2014 have helped him value every moment of life, a fact which makes the field of photography appealing to him as a hobby, helping him relax and express pent-up creativity (of which he clearly has no shortage).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pa-embeded-image\" src=\"\/\/cdn64.picsart.com\/199986551002201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"\" data-id=\"199986551002201\" \/><script src=\"\/\/picsart.com\/embed.js?v1.1.0\" async=\"async\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>But fatherhood, Willem admits, has perhaps been the most powerful and rewarding of all these experiences. He became a father to his son Mario in 2007 and to another son Owen in 2012, and recalls, \u201cIt was really exciting and scary at the same time, knowing I\u2019m responsible for a human being other than myself. Being a dad made me a better person. It&#8217;s a chance for me to be a mentor for my kids and to teach them to set goals for themselves and achieve them. Failure is part of growing up, but never stop trying. Treat and respect others the way you want to be treated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pa-embeded-image\" src=\"\/\/cdn71.picsart.com\/183500368002201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"\" data-id=\"183500368002201\" \/><script src=\"\/\/picsart.com\/embed.js?v1.1.0\" async=\"async\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until 2014 that he began combining several of his passions in one curious place, his PicsArt gallery. Willem\u2019s edits are an absurd compilation of adventure imagery, fatherhood and pure, undiluted creativity. \u201cI work long hours and a lot of the time away from home,\u201d says Willem, and so involving his sons in his creative projects turned into a way of spending more quality time together and bonding as a family.<\/p>\n<p>Including his sons in the creative process also helps Willem teach them about the importance of creativity in daily life, which has proven immensely important to him throughout his adult years. \u201cCreativity involves imagination; by having a vivid imagination you learn the ability to think of unusual ways to solve challenges, and life is full of challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pa-embeded-image\" src=\"\/\/cdn65.picsart.com\/194121464003201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"\" data-id=\"194121464003201\" \/><script src=\"\/\/picsart.com\/embed.js?v1.1.0\" async=\"async\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>He says his oldest son Mario (eight years old) is easy to work with and loves it. As Willem says, he is \u201ca real natural in front of the camera.\u201d His youngest son Owen (three years old), on the other hand, is a bit more hesitant, but enter some sweets into the equation, and before you know it, Willem says, \u201che cannot wait to see his pictures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pa-embeded-image\" src=\"\/\/cdn63.picsart.com\/196977252001201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"\" data-id=\"196977252001201\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not all of the work in Willem\u2019s gallery is imbued with adventure. He also uses PicsArt as a way to give even quieter times a special sort of timelessness and to capture the intimacy and vulnerability of a fleeting moment. This is important to him, he says, because \u201cWhen I watch them play, I see two innocent souls in a world that\u00a0they need to grow and mature into, so I want to capture them in scenes where they are two boys still believing in superheroes and playing with toys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pa-embeded-image\" src=\"\/\/cdn66.picsart.com\/197226551002201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"\" data-id=\"197226551002201\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The boys\u2019 favorite picture is above,\u00a0where Willem edited in their\u00a0favorite superheroes, #Batman and #Superman, as they stand in a superhero-esque pose, but he says that his favorite is one he calls #BrotherlyLove because \u201cit captures what it means to be a brother: to always be there for each other, to look out for each other and to learn from each other.\u201d<br \/>\n<script src=\"\/\/picsart.com\/embed.js?v1.1.0\" async=\"async\"><\/script><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pa-embeded-image\" src=\"\/\/cdn56.picsart.com\/179756945001201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"\" data-id=\"179756945001201\" \/><script src=\"\/\/picsart.com\/embed.js?v1.1.0\" async=\"async\"><\/script><br \/>\n<em><strong><i>So, how do you feel about Willem&#8217;s story?
