They are the small set of subjects your audience can expect from you. Choosing them well is what turns scattered posting into something people follow on purpose.

The short answer

A pillar is a subject you could post about fifty times without repeating yourself.

That test rules out most things people write on a planning document. “Behind the scenes” is a pillar. “My studio tour” is one post. The difference matters. A pillar has to keep producing after the obvious ideas run out, and a topic worth four posts leaves you stuck within a fortnight.

What counts as a pillar, and what does not

Three things get confused with pillars and behave differently.

A format is not a pillar. Tutorials, reels, and carousels describe how a post is made, not what it is about. You can deliver one pillar through several formats, and you probably should.

A single topic is not a pillar. One idea, however good, has no depth behind it. Pillars are categories that contain many ideas.

Your niche is not a pillar either. A niche is the whole territory. Pillars are the routes you take through it. Two creators in the same niche can run completely different sets.

The useful shape is a subject broad enough for dozens of posts, and narrow enough that someone could describe it back to you in one sentence.

How many to run

Three to five is the working range, and the reason is practical rather than magical.

Fewer than three and the feed reads as one note, which limits who follows you. More than five and nothing repeats often enough to stick. The audience never learns what you are for. Most creators land on four.

Start at the low end. Adding a pillar later is easy, and dropping one after you have trained an audience to expect it is not.

How to choose yours

Four steps, in order.

1. Look at what you have already made. Pull your last twenty or thirty posts and sort them into rough groups. Patterns appear whether or not you planned them, and the groups you already return to are candidate pillars with evidence behind them.

2. Check which ones performed. Use reach and shares rather than likes, because those show what travelled past your existing followers. A theme you enjoy that consistently goes nowhere is a hobby, not a pillar.

3. Test each candidate against the fifty-post question. Can you list ten specific posts for it right now, without straining? If ten is hard, fifty is impossible, and the pillar will collapse within a month.

4. Check the set covers different jobs. A good set usually mixes four things: something that teaches, something that entertains, something that shows the person behind the account, and something that proves the work. Four pillars that all teach will wear an audience out.

Content pillar examples

The sets below show the shape rather than prescribing subjects.

A creator making AI video might run: finished pieces, how a specific effect was made, tools and what changed this month, and mistakes worth avoiding.

A designer might run: client work, breakdowns of someone else’s design, opinions on trends, and process from blank canvas to finish.

Notice that each set has one pillar that is easy to produce and one that is hard. That balance matters more than the subjects themselves. Make every pillar a full day of work and you will post less often than you planned.

How to tell whether yours are working

Give a new set about six weeks before judging it.

Look for three things.

Did each pillar produce posts at roughly the rate you expected? One that keeps getting skipped is a pillar you do not actually want.

Does reach differ sharply between them? That tells you where to spend more time.

Has anyone described your account back to you accurately? That is the real evidence the themes are legible from outside.

Drop what is not working rather than adding more. Most weak pillar sets are too large, not too small.

Turning pillars into a posting plan

Pillars do their real work at the planning stage, where they replace a blank week with a short list.

The simplest method is rotation. Assign each pillar a slot, cycle through them, and refill whichever runs dry. That alone prevents the two failures most feeds have: three weeks of the same subject, then nothing.

Batching is the other gain. Producing three posts for one pillar in a session is faster than producing three unrelated posts, because the setup, the references, and the mindset carry across. A pillar you can batch is worth more than one you cannot.

Using pillars to pick paid work

Pillars stop being a planning exercise the moment there is money attached, because they turn “should I take this?” into a question with an answer.

Picsart Earn publishes paid briefs you browse and pick from. The program says plainly that you choose the ones matching your niche and how you already create. A brief landing inside one of your pillars is content you would arguably have made anyway, now paid for. A brief outside all of them costs more than it looks, because you are learning a new subject and working to someone else’s rules at once.

That makes the Earn campaigns board much faster to read. Filter to your format and your channels, then take the brief closest to a pillar you already run. Payouts come from real audience engagement. A piece your audience recognizes as yours has a real advantage over one that arrives from nowhere.

Frequently asked questions

                    What are content pillars?

The three to five recurring themes an account posts about, chosen in advance so every post fits somewhere.
