The Minimalist Skincare Advertisement Banner template in Picsart Flow shows the whole move on one canvas.

Out of the box, the template extends a portrait product photo into a 16:9 banner and sets a headline and button into the new space. Change the aspect ratio and the direction in one prompt, and the same canvas produces the other formats.

The technical name for this is outpainting, and many tools call it uncrop. Below: what it can and cannot do, which shape each platform wants, and a step-by-step run with your own photo.

What extending a photo with AI adds, and what it cannot bring back

Cropping a photo to fit a new format throws pixels away, and a product near the edge loses its cap or its label. Stretching keeps the pixels but drags them, so a round jar turns oval. Extending an image is the third option: the original stays untouched and fresh pixels grow around it.

So what is outpainting, exactly? The model reads the light, texture and colour at the edge of the frame and continues them outward, like a set painter extending a backdrop. A wall keeps its tone, a shelf keeps its line, a shadow keeps falling the same way.

The honest part matters. AI image extension invents plausible background. It cannot recover what a crop removed or what the camera never captured, so trying to uncrop a photo someone else trimmed returns a convincing guess, not the missing scene. For product shots on a wall or a studio backdrop, that guess only needs to be clean and believable.

One photo, many shapes: what each platform asks for

Every platform frames content differently, and a single shoot rarely matches all of them. The sample photo in the template is 4:5, the tall rectangle feeds favour. Here is where the other common shapes show up and which way a 4:5 shot has to grow to reach them.

Shape

Where it shows up

Extend a 4:5 photo

16:9

YouTube thumbnails, website hero banners, presentations

Sideways, the template’s default

21:9

Extra-wide web headers and banners

Sideways, much further

1:1

Square feed posts, marketplace and profile tiles

Slightly sideways

9:16

Stories, Reels, TikTok and Shorts

Up and down

4:5

Feed posts

No extension needed

Nano Banana 2, the model running both generation passes in the template, accepts all of these ratios in Picsart Flow. The direction column is the part that needs a human decision, because it decides where the empty space lands.

Why the prompt names a direction

The outpaint pass runs Nano Banana 2 at 16:9, and its prompt is one tidy instruction: “Extend background to the left. Keep the products unchanged and leave clean empty space for advertising text.”

“To the left” is the layout decision. A 4:5 photo kept at the full height of a 16:9 frame covers only about 45% of its width, so more than half the banner is new pixels. One-sided extension pushes the product to the right and leaves a broad, quiet block on the left, where left-aligned copy reads first.

Every format needs its own version of that sentence. A story frame wants space above and below, a square post wants a little air on both sides. “Keep the products unchanged” stays in every version, because it is the line that protects the label.

How to extend a photo for different platforms in Picsart Flow

Open the extend photo AI template and it lands straight in the Flow editor with the sample photo and copy already wired in.
