Expand images beyond their borders with AI

What you'll learn
What is AI image expansion?
Common use cases
Expand your image step by step
STEP 1: Upload your image
- On web: Go to picsart.com/ai-image-extender → Upload your image
- On mobile: Open Picsart → "+" → Select photo → AI Expand
STEP 2: Choose expansion direction
Select how you want to expand:
- Horizontal: Add space to left, right, or both sides
- Vertical: Add space to top, bottom, or both
- Preset aspect ratios: Quick conversion to 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5, etc.
- Custom: Drag edges to specify exact dimensions

STEP 3: Generate expanded image
Click "Expand" and wait a few seconds. The AI analyzes your photo's content, colors, lighting, and patterns, then generates new content in the expanded areas that blends naturally with your original image.
STEP 4: Review and export
Check that the expanded areas look natural: Not perfect? Generate again for a different result, or manually edit problem areas with other Picsart tools.
- Look for smooth transitions between original and generated content
- Check that lighting and colors match throughout the image
- Verify no strange artifacts or duplicated elements appear
Tips for best results
💡 Start with simple backgrounds
AI expansion works best on images with relatively simple or repetitive backgrounds (sky, water, grass, walls). Photos with complex or unique backgrounds may produce less predictable results and require multiple generations.
💡 Expand in small increments
Instead of expanding 200% in one go, try expanding 50% at a time. Smaller expansions give AI more context from the original image and produce more accurate results. You can always expand the result again if you need more space.
💡 Use preset ratios for social media
Instead of manually dragging edges, use the preset aspect ratio buttons for instant conversion to Instagram (1:1, 4:5), YouTube (16:9), TikTok (9:16), or other platform requirements. These presets calculate the perfect expansion automatically.
💡 Keep your subject centered
Images with the main subject near the center expand more successfully than images where the subject is already at the edge. If your subject is off-center, consider cropping it to the middle first, then expanding.
