On any given day in Guatemala City, you may find PicsArtistic Diego Morales (@diegomorales18) out in the streets with his friends and his camera on a shoot. Whether he’s shooting single-model fashion shoots, performance art, or just snapshots of daily life hanging about his hometown, Diego is always full of inspiration and ready to go out and try something new.
Ballerinas in tutus extend their silhouettes through the backdrop of a street alley; a girl hugs her knees resting against an elaborate urban mural; a man in a black fedora bounds through a junkyard under a searing sunset.
No matter what he shoots, however, Diego’s images are more than gorgeously lit scenes around town. “What inspires me is to catch emotions that we will never live again in the right moment, to me it is like stopping time every time I look at a picture.” This is perhaps the most compelling aspect of Diego’s work, how each image manages to form an emotional connection with the moment.
Though he is a college student, Diego discovered his passion for photography at another place where many people go to find answers. “I started photography going to church, because I didn’t have any idea of what I was good at, until I found a place in the church that let me start photography. Then I knew what I was good at and I started to learn more about it.”
As he shot more and more and developed his craft, along the way, Diego downloaded PicsArt which helped him to dive even deeper into his passion and keep his finger on the pulse. “It has helped me to learn about other people’s techniques, it was like a boost. It also shows me new trends.”
As for the people in his photos, they are Diego’s circle of friends, a freewheeling group of young creatives, each one with their own personal artistic passion, be it music, dance or the like. “These friends of mine are people that stand on what they do, and same as me, they also do it with passion.”
But Diego is the photographer of the group, and his photos invite us into his circle and his city. Whether you know anything about Diego or not, one look at his photos makes you feel like you are there with him and his friends, alive in the streets of Guatemala City.
