How far the upscale actually travels

The upscale factor runs from 1.5x to 3x and is measured against the resolution of the source rather than a fixed output size. Starting from an HD clip, that lands roughly at 1080p, 2K and 4K.

Two ceilings shape what comes back:

  • The source has to be 2K (2560 x 1440) or smaller. The model upscales toward 4K and does not take 4K going in.
  • Output frames cap at roughly 14.4 megapixels. Asking for 3x on a source that is already large lands below the factor you requested.

Clips that break either limit are rejected before processing. Nothing is quietly trimmed or downscaled behind your back, so a rejection is a clear instruction to go back and prepare the source.

The prompt box is optional and steers creative detail only

Flux Video Upscale runs perfectly well with nothing typed. An empty box produces a neutral upscale, which is the normal way to use it.

A short description of what is in the clip gives creative mode something to aim at. Describing a shoreline at dusk points the invented detail toward water and sky rather than leaving the model to work it out alone.

The prompt does not direct an edit the way it would in a video generation model. It steers the kind of detail that gets added, and nothing beyond that.

What to feed it

Source quality sets the ceiling on the result. Compression artifacts limit how much real detail can be recovered, so the least compressed copy you have is the one to upload.

The practical limits:

  • Clips up to 20 seconds
  • Source resolution from 480p up to 2K
  • Any aspect ratio, preserved in the output

Run the upscale as the final step, after the edit and the trim are done. Upscaling first means paying for frames that get cut later.
