Today is World Photo Day, a global event when everyone celebrates the anniversary of the first photographic process patent in 1839. All last week, we asked users to share their best shots for World Photo Day with the weekly tag #worldphotoday. Now that the day is upon us, we are featuring some of the best shots from last week’s tag.
World Photo Day began in 2010 with the goal to unite local and global communities in a worldwide celebration of photography. Today’s date is significant because it marks 175 years of photography. In 1837 Joseph Nicèphore Nièpce and Louis Daguerre invented the Daguerreotype, the first practical photographic process. Two years later on August 19th, the French government purchased the patent and made the invention public, declaring it a gift “free to the world”. This is the date we celebrate!
The organizers of World Photo Day suggest that we all celebrate photography in our unique way, whether it’s going on a photography date, organizing a photography adventure, or reading up on photography with a good book. #worldphotoday was our way of celebrating as a community, so start off your World Photo Day right and enjoy these terrific shots below.
