Photographers are often chomping at the bits to visit Paris, but I’ve been living here for three years and I still get overwhelmed when people ask me what to see. There is so much can’t-miss stuff to see that you can’t help but miss most of it, but you’ll do a lot better if you know where to look. Because so many of you are coming here for the summer and fall, I thought I would reach out to the wandering photographers out there and help you crack the nut that is Paris. You know about the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, and the Cathedral of Notre Dame, but I’m going to try and give you a bird’s-eye view of what comes after the obvious, so you can start to find your way around this city’s endless marvels. Let’s get started. Your Morning Photo Promenade: Montmartre Having been a hilltop village for most of Paris’ history, Montmartre has…

It’s National Trails Day! And it’s summer! And the sun is out and the sky is blue and the temperature is flawless (I am speaking this into existence)! What better way to spend a day like today than taking yourself on a hike and unleashing your inner explorer? Since you probably can’t come up with an answer that would satisfy me, pack your rucksack with an apple, a camera and plenty of water, put on your most comfortable pair of sneaks (a hike is no time for a fashion show), and remember these 10 simple tips to snap the perfect shot (they’re great life advice, too). Stay hydrated. You might not think this applies to a good photograph, but hydration keeps you conscious, and consciousness is the key to any good photo, really. Don’t wait for the perfect weather. Unless there’s a fiery Armageddon raining down from the sky, there’s no…

As a lifestyle photographer, I always found travel photography very daunting. From getting all the right gear (zoom lens, wide-angle lens, tripod, etc.) to fiddling with filters to climbing steep mountains, travel photography seems to take a whole set of skills I wasn’t sure I had. However, I quickly realized something. Much like all other photography, travel photography is about telling a story. It’s about how different shots work together, and it doesn’t always mean that the most epic photo of a snow-capped peak is the best photo. It’s about capturing the perfect moment and telling the story of where you are. Below are six tips to help you get started in travel photography. First: plan, plan, plan. But leave room for spontaneity. I know, I know — talk about mixed messages. When heading to a new place, make sure to do your due diligence when researching epic spots. Because I’m very…

By Spot, your guide to the best places in the world *for you* according to the friends and experts you trust. It could be (and has been) said that Zach Stovall (@zachstovall in Spot) has the best job in the world. As the senior staff photographer for ISLANDS and Destinations Weddings & Honeymoons magazines, he travels constantly — sometimes multiple times a month. But while your standard-issue business trip plays out in stale conference rooms and sad hotel bars, Stovall is tasked with capturing the could-be-unreal scenes that will be splashed across glossy magazine spreads, inciting wanderlust in a readership that demands it. Given that the man knows his way around all types of scenery, from coastlines to mountaintops, and could probably take a decent photo with his eyes closed, we asked him to share five easy tips that anyone could use to take better landscape photos. Check out his advice…
