There are lots of different ways to get creative with words in your images. In this step-by-step tutorial, we’ll share a new technique with you: overlaying a text box onto your image. Follow along to learn how to do it, and don’t forget to share your work!
Step 1: Open Image in Draw
Tap on Draw and select Photo.
Step 2: Crop Image
Select the photo you would like to use. The image will automatically be opened in the Crop Tool. Once you’ve made your selection, tap on the check mark to confirm and enter Draw.
Step 3: Open Shape Tool
Pinch to zoom out on your image (this will make it easier to draw your text box). Tap on the Shape Tool icon.
Step 4: Adjust Shape Tool Settings
In the settings menu that opens, make sure that the square option is highlighted, and select Fill. Use the Opacity slider to reduce the opacity to approximately 85%.
Step 5: Draw Text Box
Tap OK to close the settings menu for the Shape Tool. Use your finger to draw your text box. Don’t worry if your box extends beyond your canvas—the extra space will not be visible.
Step 6: Select Color for Text Box
Make sure that your text box is still selected (you’ll see white circles at each corner of the box when it is selected). Tap on the black square icon to open the Color Chooser. Select white and tap on the check mark to confirm.
Step 7: Open Layers Drawer
Tap on the layers icon to open the layers drawer. Tap on the plus sign.
Step 8: Create New Layer
Select “Empty layer” to create a new layer. Tap on the text icon to open the Text Tool.
Step 9: Enter Text
Tap on the “Preview text” box to open your device’s keyboard. Type your text and close the keyboard.
Step 10: Select Font
Select the font you would like to use. Tap on the square white box to open the Color Chooser.
Step 11: Select Font Color
Select the color black. Tap on the check mark to confirm your color selection.
Step 12: Confirm
Tap on the check mark again to close the Text Tool. Tap on the layers icon to hide the layers drawer.
Step 13: Apply Text
Drag your finger along the textbox to apply your text. Tap on the layers icon to open the layers drawer again.
Step 14: Select Blending Mode
Tap on the Normal text to view your blending options. Select Xor.
Step 15: Merge Layers
Making sure that you have your top layer selected, tap on the layer options icon and select Merge.
Step 16: Confirm & Save
Tap on the check mark to confirm. Your image will automatically be opened in the Editor, where you can save or share it!
