Oh, the humble t-shirt. Originally designed as an undergarment, it wasn’t actually considered fashionable to wear one until the 1950s. Despite being worn by the U.S. Navy between 1898 and 1913 during the Mexican-American War, it wasn’t until Marlon Brando wore a white t-shirt in the 1951 screen adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire that they became a fashionable item of clothing. Swiftly followed by James Dean in 1955’s Rebel Without a Cause, t-shirt design soon took off and even became a symbol of rebellion. Pretty cool, huh?
